| Description: | Prior to the passage of the Rome Statute in 1998, women’s human rights activists engaged in a campaign to demand prosecution of gender-based crimes in the proposed International Criminal Court. Because of this campaign, the International Criminal Court is the first international criminal justice mechanism that explicitly takes into account gender concerns in both its administrative structure and its general subject matter jurisdiction. The International Criminal Court serves as a symbol of a legal system that takes the concerns and needs of women seriously.
