Did you know that December 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada? Established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada, this day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal. They died because they were women.

   Thanks for remembering this day. For a slightly different perspective than that provided by my government at the page linked here, check out four posts at the blog written by Toronto feminist journalist Antonia Zerbisias. There has been a great deal of contention about the 20th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre and most feminists are thoroughly disgusted by the way our Conservative government has attempted to play on our sympathies by their acknowledgement of the day without accompanying political action. In fact, our government is actively engaged in doing everything it can to undermine whatever constructive responses there have been to the massacre over the last two decades – and those responses were far from adequate to being with.
