I thought in my own mind that before you could even go out there and play, you had to be as good as the people you were listening to on records. So I was ready to go, go, go, and I think pretty much everybody else in the band was. I guess I have a desire to sing and write music again, and Im letting it take me places. There is only so much you can do before it bores everybody to death. He started playing violin, but he later changed to drums. For a while, I was doing too many studio gigs, and I couldn't wait to get on the road. Ask me the question again? Same for the bass. I wouldnt drink onstage, but Id get offstage, and when I got in the bus, thered be a chilled bottle of whatever vodka I was drinking, and Id start plowin into it. Theres a heavy jazz-fusion influence, and none of the songs are as anthemic as Dont Stop Believin or Lights, the songs that would make you famous. With the other company that Im a part of, Nocturne [a video-production studio]between that and the residuals that I get, yes, I could live comfortably and just hang it up. At the end of the last video from my solo album, for Foolish Heart, theres an extra tag-on section that I shot for the video, to just tell everybody that that particular phase of my career was now over and now Im back to Journey. It's easy to keep going at a high level of intensity for a four- minute solo, and just go through fast and end it. When you're first starting out, you have to make a name for yourself, and you don't make a name for yourself by being hidden under the name of something else. And then the second song we wrote, I was downstairs in Gregg Rolies house, where I was living, in Mill Valley, and Perry was over, and we were sittin down in the beanbags in the music room, and he started singin me these melodies that he had, for Lights. And I just started putting the stumble to it, felt like it was gonna be a stumble, and tried to give it some Hendrix-y type chords, to make it sound cool, and then I added a bridge to that, for a guitar solo, and that one was done, in about ten minutes. We dont get along, but I love his playing. RM: How did you first get involved with music? We were all sitting in a room and Frank said, "Whoever comes through that door next will play bass in the movie," and Martin [Lickert] walked in. Herbie built that band around Neal because hes a star on his own from a guitar standpoint. I think it was in Denver, Coloradothey were opening for Emerson, Lake and Palmer at the time. Completely. This is the healthiest Ive ever been, and I think its the best Ive been playin. I found that I liked using two bass drums. And I think that actually might have provoked Perry to go and do a solo record. I find that now, though, even when I push myself, I don't have to go into overdrive. And I think that proving myself was something that went on for quite some time with the. The music is dear to me. And the only one that was consistent was, When the pain gets great enough, youll replace the hip. And I said, Excuse me? Do you think that dynamic was set up from the beginning? I think thats getting a little into the area of conjecture. So it felt freeing at some level to be a free agent, in 98, cause the industry was really changing, and the Internet was becoming a big thing, and I thought, Gee, the futures kinda wide open. And then [laughs] then I just got this unbelievable freaky drive, which shows the neurosis of the singer-songwriter. Yeah, I ran right out there. RM: I noticed you and Craig looking at each other a lot. Aynsley Dunbar, Court Case No. And he pretty much came back and said, Yknow, this is a personal issue, and Im not gonna be pushed in a corner to get my hip fid.
